Follow the A66 west from Keswick.

Take the turning for Braithwaite on the left.

Through the village keep left and follow signs for Newlands and Buttermere.

Turn left over the bridge

Follow this road for 3 miles ignoring all turn offs.

Birkrigg is the first property on the right hand side.

Things to Do

There is plenty to see and do in and around Keswick and the rest of the beautiful Lake district.

The Newlands Valley is ideally situated for walkers and those wanting to explore the Lake District. Many walks can be done right from the cottage door. It is a lovely peaceful valley offering magnificent views from every aspect. Walks are suitable for all abilities, from the mountain tops to the valley bottom. The popular walk up Catbells is on the opposite side of the valley from the cottage.

A longer walk,The Newlands Horseshoe takes in Maiden Moor,High Spy, Dale Head and Hindscarth all visible from the windows.

The Swinside Inn is the local pub and is a 1.5 miles away.

The Newlands Adventure Centre in the valley offers a wide range of activities from ghyll scrambling, climbing and canoeing


Nearby is the beautiful village of Buttermere with its lake, stunning scenery, tea rooms and two pubs. Just a little further along is the Honister Slate Mine, it offers mine tours into the old slate mine and a Via Ferrata course.


The village of Braithwaite is 3 miles away. There are three pubs all serving a variety of food and drink. The ColedaleThe Royal Oak and The Middle Ruddings. There is a small village shop.

Whinlatter Forest is nearby and offers lovely walks, a children’s play area, shop, tearoom and a large selection of mountain biking routes and bike hire. Also on site is the Go Ape high ropes course.


The market town of Keswick is 5 miles away and offers a great choice of shops, tea rooms, and places to eat. There are many attractions in the town including a Alhambra Cinema, swimming pool and the popular Theatre by the Lake with performances all year round. The town also has lovely parks and recreational facilities. Many festivals and events take place in the town through the year.

Derwentwater Lake is close by. The Keswick Launch offers cruises and you can hop on or off at the jetties around the lake or walk all or parts of it. There are many walks nearby offering stunning views.

Nearby is Dodd Wood where it is possible to view red squirrels and many woodland birds. From April to September the Osprey view point is open.

The Old Sawmill Tearoom specialises in good homemade Cumbrian cooking.

Mirehouse is opposite Dodd Wood. It is a family run historic house with many literary connections. There  are delightful gardens and children’s play areas.


The small village of Portinscale is 3 miles away and has access to the lake and a marina offering boat hire, windsurfing, kayaking and the Keswick Launch. There is a pub in the village and the popular Chalet tea room and restaurant.

Borrowdale Valley is easy to explore from Newlands. The other well known areas of the Lake District, Grasmere, Ambleside, Rydal,and Crummock are all within easy driving distance.
